Position Overview

Reporting to the Head of Mine Planning and Capital Projects, the Engineer Mining will play a key role in creating Preliminary Feasibility Studies (PFS) for the company's underground mine operations. In addition to developing PFS, the incumbent will also be actively supporting long-term mine plans, five-year and one-year plans for BDM's underground operations. 

As part of the Mine Planning Team, the Engineer Mining candidate will work a Monday to Friday schedule at the Calgary Corporate Office. Occasional site visits will be required. The successful candidate will become a valued member of the Mine Planning team and serve as the primary contact for developing PFS for the company's underground mine operations.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

• Demonstrating Felt Safety Leadership as part of your daily work;
• Carrying out all duties in accordance with the corporate charter and values;
• Creating PFS for Company underground mine projects;
• Effectively interacting with third party technical consultants, contractors;
• Providing support in developing life of mine, long range, 5 year and one year mine plans;
• Facilitating weekly and monthly meetings to communicate the PFS development updates to key stakeholders;
• Developing effective water management processes;
• Developing risk assessed and optimized underground mine designs including ramps, raises, and electrical, dewatering and other services infrastructure;
• Providing ventilation engineering support including simulations and network designs;
• Completing regular field trips to assess compliance to plan and adherence to safety standards;
• Completing month end actuals and corporate reporting as required;
• Establishing or assisting in development of JHA’s and SOP’s;
• Providing coaching and mentorship to junior staff members;
• Providing technical support on geotechnical monitoring, ground supports, designing support systems and creating support plans for underground operations;
• Maintaining and fostering company – contractor relations. 

 

Education/Experience

• A degree in Mining Engineering and around 10 years of experience in underground mining operations or technical consulting (UG). Experience in technical supervisory or   mentorship roles is advantageous. Must be a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in Canada, with a preference for registration in the Northwest Territories;
• PMP certification or experience in project scheduling and execution is required; 
• Hands on planning and operation experience in working in sub level caving and block caving mining methods;
• Experience in creating capital forecasts, financial modeling and economic modeling; 
• Proven experience in multiple areas including but not limited to mine design, scheduling, ventilation design, and drill & blast;
• Proficiency in Deswik is mandatory; familiarity with other relevant software programs (e.g., MS Office Suite, Ventsim, AutoCAD, or Vulcan) is optional;
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
• Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills (English);
• Leadership, planning and organizational skills;
• Knowledge of general mining safety requirements and procedures;
• Proven time management and decision-making skills;
• Working knowledge of SAP would be an asset;
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team to achieve best-in-class efficiency and productivity; 
• Class 5 driver's license is required;
• Experience working in the mining industry, northern Canada, and an understanding of the northern regulatory environment is preferred.

Additional Information

The Company provides travel to and from the Ekati mine site out of Calgary, Yellowknife, and other northern fly points.
