Position Overview
Reporting to the Head of Mine Technical Services working four (4) by (3) rotation at the Ekati Mine site, the Superintendent – MTS will develop and communicate risk assessed Short and Medium term mine and production plans that maximize the utilization and effectiveness of the Production Department and the mineral resource. They will maintain the risk management system to manage Irrespirable atmosphere, Inrush, and Fall of Ground risks at Ekati. Monitor effectiveness of the existing controls for these risks and to develop and communicate plans to improve these controls. Provide geoscience services to support development and communication of risk assessed short term mine and production plans that maximize the utilization and effectiveness of the Production Department and the mineral resource.
Job Duties/Responsibilities
- Ensure that mine design, ventilation and maintenance of mine plans, and Ground Stability Design, Water and Drainage activities and related Reportable Incident reporting are conducted in accordance with the NWT Mine Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
- Develop, maintain and continuously improve Ekati’s mining engineering and geological sciences processes, procedures and tools.
- Ensure that Material Risk Management Plans, Standards, Procedures, Work instructions and JHAs for Irrespirable Atmosphere, Mud Inrush, and Fall of Ground are routinely applied and regularly reviewed and updated in order to ensure adequate control of these risks.
- Provide detailed, safe and practical weekly mine activity schedules for the underground and open pit operations to support execution of the 12 Week Integrated Mine Plan.
- Provide optimized, risk assessed and achievable 12 Week Integrated Mine Plans and Schedules that incorporate all resources required to deliver carats from Ekati.
- Design excavations for dewatering infrastructure in accordance with capacity and location advice provided by the Geosciences group.
- Conduct scenario analysis and risk review to determine optimized production plans for the 24 month schedule.
- Complete mine planning tasks including development of Budget physicals for the yearly Budget cycle.
- Complete stope design, provide drill & blast designs and deliver operational instructions to support drill & blast activities at Ekati.
- Provide day to day geotechnical management of the operation through monitoring and regular inspections of the mine operations.
- Provide day to day ventilation management of the underground operation including ventilation design, monitoring and reporting.
- Provide cave engineering services including cave design, flow modelling, reserve depletion and provision of detailed draw rules and cave commandments to support daily cave management.
- Manage the Ekati Mine Planning capital and operating budgets.
- Complete all Reserve reporting as required by National Instrument 43-101 and National Instrument 52-102.
- Complete corporate reporting as required. (eg Diamond Cycle reporting).
- Provide operational mining engineering support to the Resource Planning and Development Department and the Projects Department.
- Complete exploration drilling, geological modelling and geotechnical characterization for Ekati.
- Conduct hydrology investigations, determine capacity requirements for dewatering systems and provide operational instructions to manage water ingress and inrush risk to the mine operations.
Education/Experience
- A tertiary qualification in Engineering (mining, geological)
- Designation as a Professional Engineer in the Northwest Territories or the ability to obtain this designation.
- NWT WCB Supervisor Two certification or the ability to obtain this.

Additional Information
The Company provides travel to and from the Ekati mine site out of Calgary, Yellowknife, and other northern fly points.
